Program Details

The Larrakia Elders Social Group provides a welcoming, safe, and culturally respectful environment where older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can come together to enjoy companionship, participate in meaningful activities, and maintain strong social connections within their community.

The program operates a minimum of three days per week and offers a variety of centre-based group activities that encourage social interaction, personal wellbeing, and continued participation in community life. Activities are designed to be enjoyable, inclusive, and appropriate to the interests, abilities, and cultural backgrounds of participants.

The program may include:

•  Arts and crafts.
• Games, quizzes, and recreational activities.
• Music, singing, storytelling, and cultural activities.
• Gentle exercise and movement activities.
• Guest speakers and educational sessions.
• Celebrations of birthdays, cultural events, and special occasions.
• Community outings and day trips.
• Opportunities for participants to share knowledge, experiences, and life stories.

Morning tea and lunch are provided during each program day, creating additional opportunities for participants to socialise and enjoy meals together in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Transport is available for participants requiring pick-up and drop-off within the Greater Darwin and Palmerston areas, supporting safe and reliable access to the program.

Objective

The Leisure & Lifestyle Support Worker plays an important role in ensuring participants are welcomed, supported, and encouraged to take part in activities while maintaining a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment for everyone attending the program.
This service aims to:

• Maintain and strengthen clients' connection with their community, culture, and peers
• Promote independence, dignity, and quality of life.
• Encourage participation in activities that enhance physical, emotional, social, and cognitive wellbeing.
• Reduce social isolation and loneliness by providing opportunities for meaningful social interaction.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with participant transport, including safe pick-up and drop-off within the Greater Darwin and Palmerston areas, ensuring vehicle safety procedures are followed.
• Promote friendship, companionship, and social inclusion.
• Support emotional, social, and general wellbeing
• Encourage active participation in enjoyable and meaningful group activities.
• Provide assistance to participants with day-to-day needs during program hours while promoting dignity, independence, and choice.
• Assist with the preparation, serving, and clean-up of morning tea, lunch, and refreshments in accordance with food safety and hygiene practices.
• Monitor participants' health, comfort, safety, and general wellbeing, responding appropriately to any concerns and reporting incidents promptly.
• Maintain participants' connection with their community, culture, and peers.
• Support the planning, preparation, and delivery of engaging, culturally appropriate group activities that promote social interaction, wellbeing, and community connection.
• Provide opportunities for participants to remain active, engaged, and connected in a supportive group environment.
• Follow safe work practices and comply with organisational policies, including privacy, confidentiality, and annual influenza vaccination requirements.
• Deliver services that respect the cultural values, traditions, and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while recognising and respecting the Larrakia people as the Traditional Owners of the Darwin region.

Selection Criteria

• Previous experience in a similar role and Certificate III (or higher) in Aged Care & Disability or Community Services
• To respect and respond to the individual needs and preferences of the client and communicate effectively with clients, significant others and the organisation
• To understand and demonstrate the importance of accurate documentation and confidentiality of client’s details 
• Ability to work under limited direction, exercise initiative and apply good time management and organisational skills
• Demonstrated interpersonal, written and oral communication skills to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues
• To understand and demonstrate safe work practices and adhere to organisation policies and procedures
• Current NT Driver’s Licence (C Class), Working with Children Check (Ochre Card), and National Police Clearance

It would be considered an advantage if applicants also possess:

• Identify as Larrakia
• Understanding of cultural protocols, together with a willingness to work respectfully in accordance with Larrakia and other Indigenous culture
• Experience working with Indigenous people in the community with complex needs
