Cultural Coordinator

Program Details

The Palmerston Youth Drop In Centre is managed in partnership with YNT. The Drop In Centre aims to engage at risk young people who are beginning to disengage from services and get them back on the right path. The Centre will provide access to safe, supervised activities and targeted follow up when needed, and support young people to access services in a timely and responsive way.

Conditions of employment covered by the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation Enterprise Agreement 2018. Salary range starting at $44.04 per hour. Option to salary package a maximum of $15,899 from your gross salary each year; 5 weeks pro rata annual leave per year; and a 35-hour week. Objective

Within the YNT the LNAC cultural programs coordinator is to work in collaboration with the Palmerston Youth Drop in Centre manager to align cultural service delivery at the PYC with LNAC and YNT strategic goals. Leading the planning, delivery and evaluation of culturally safe and competent programs. Providing leadership to youth workers employed by the YNT to facilitate engagement with cultural programs, engaging with community stakeholders to assure program delivery aligns with other services in the area.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Build positive relationships and engage with young people accessing the Palmerston Youth Drop In Centre.
  • Work in partnership with YNT, Northern Territory Government, key community stakeholders and young people to develop and grow the Drop In Centre.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders relevant to the delivery of cultural programs at the PYC ie; City of Palmerston, Office of Youth Affairs, Palmerston Indigenous Network, assuring delivery of cultural program aligns with wider community outcomes for young ATSI people.
  • Identify an annual calendar of culturally significant events for ATSI young people that will inform cultural program delivery at the PYC, to be shared with the PYC and LNAC Family Services manager. 
  • Lead the development of long term (12 months and longer) strategic goals for cultural programs with support from the PYC manager.
  • Develop monthly calendars outlining cultural programs and submit to PYC manager and LNAC manager on last Wednesday of every month for approval.
  • Provide direct instruction and leadership to PYC Youth Workers on a daily basis to facilitate YP engagement with cultural programs calendar.
  • Provide an itemized list of resources required for delivery of cultural program delivery to PYC and LNAC Family Services manager monthly for approval.
  • Track engagement with cultural programs and receiving feedback from participants about areas of improvement to be implemented in following month(s), includes feedback from PYC participants about programs to include on monthly and annual calendars.
  • Maintain safeguarding requirements as outline in the Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy and Procedure. ie; complete annual Safeguarding training via Cognology onboarding platform. 
  • Adhere to legislative and organizational reporting requirements regarding the safety and wellbeing of Young People. ie; mandatory reporting.
  • When applicable, support operational requirements of the PYC.
  • Report directly to PYC manager and LNAC Family Services manager on outcomes of Cultural Programs on a quarterly basis.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in community services with knowledge and experience in the youth and community sector, especially with at risk and vulnerable young people
  • Understanding of cultural protocols, together with a willingness to work respectfully in accordance with Larrakia and other Indigenous culture.
  • Strong relationship building skills, including ability to develop rapport and share knowledge and skills in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and developing youth programs, including sports, arts, music and cultural.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, exercise initiative, apply good time management and organisational skills.
  • Good computer, literacy and numeracy skills, including ability to write regular reports.
  • A valid Working with Children (OCHRE) Card, Current NT Driver’s Licence (C Class minimum), Current Police check.

It would be considered an advantage if applicants also possess:

  • Identify as Larrakia
  • Hold a Certificate III or IV in Sports and Recreation
